John Kavanagh The Gravediggers has been part of Dublin since 1833. Through Famine, World Wars, Rebellion, Civil Unrest and Economic Downturns. This small Dublin Pub has remained true. The pub is nestled in what is now a beautiful green square, in a suburb North of Dublin City Centre. It stands beside the large Granite Gate of Glasnevin Cemetery. This gate was once the main gate to the dead of an emerging Nation
I hope to share some of the stories and experiences of this much loved Dublin Pub. There’ll be plenty of photos and recipes from the very talented Ciaran Kavanagh, my true love. The man that taught me how to pull a Pint and appreciate it’s goodness. Ciaran is well known for his engaging stories and much loved food he serves in the Lounge of the pub.
Of course being married into an Iconic Family Business like Kavanagh’s isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. If a Grease Trap needs cleaning the enlisted will usually be the Chef and often his wife. If the kitchen needs something to complete a dish, well often it’s the wife that will be dispatched to pick it up. Or slot in to work the floor if it’s busy night (something I do love to do, sadly not that often anymore)
One thing I didn’t account for was the amount of washing a Chef will create, be it uniforms, sticky socks or dishes. The agony is the aftermath wash up. The utter ecstasy is the amazing food creations that lead to the dreaded wash up.
One other fact about life with a talented Chef …is? animals. Animals love him, cats, dogs, foxes they all love him. And kids too. Children are drawn to him, maybe it’s because he is young at heart, and he also knows that it can be hard for a child in such a grown up environment as a pub.
Although there are many child like characters in the pub, ones that love to jeer and cajohol. These are the folk that have quick fired answers and an answer to just about every possible situation, be it political, religious, sexual or football. All an authority all to be taken with a pinch of salt!
So where to begin? How about a little bit of background into the pub itself..watch this space..
